2c Hudson-Fulton, Wash Drawing of Frame on Artist's Cardboard (372-E2). 198 x 149mm pencil drawing almost exactly matching adopted design but with "Centenary" on the essay instead of "Celebration", small mounting adherences on back corners and inconsequential small stain at bottomVERY FINE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE WASH DRAWING OF THE FRAME FOR THE 1909 HUDSON-FULTON ISSUE.
Like the vignette, the frame for the Hudson-Fulton issue was designed by Marcus W. Baldwin.
Ex Bianchi. Accompanied by a photograph of the vignette painted by Baldwin
2c Hudson-Fulton, Model on Card (372-E3). Wash drawing of frame with photo of No. 372-E1 vignette mounted in place and also worked over with wash, model mounted on 119 x 72mm thick grey card, the frame design is similar to the adopted design except at top corners with inscriptions "1609-1807" and "Series 1909", instead of "1609" and 1909" as seen on the 372-E4 essay and on the issued stamp, the "Celebration" inscription is as the issued stampVERY FINE. A UNIQUE COMPOSITE MODEL FOR THE 1909 2-CENT HUDSON-FULTON ISSUE, WITH REJECTED INSCRIPTIONS AT TOP.
The Scott Catalogue introduces significant confusion in its listing for this essay. The catalogue description for the essay is very similar to what appears here but they leave out the "Series 1909" inscription at top right. In addition, the illustration for the Scott listing is completely different from what is described (it is a cropped illustration for the model in 372-E4, which must be an error). With 2016 P.F. certificate

Hitchcock" in both places, initials and pencil "P.O. 488" in bottom right corner, few minor faults do not detractVERY FINE. ROOSEVELT.
According to research by essay-proof authority James E. Lee and an article by Clarence Brazer in the Essay-Proof Journal, three sets of full-size unmounted die proofs on wove paper were produced in the 1930s by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) -- covering issues from the 1898 Trans-Mississippi through the 1934 Mother's Day. One set, with proving room numbers on the face, remained full size and became part of the Hugh M. Southgate collection (thought to be part of a trade with the BEP) and then the Caroline Prentiss Cromwell collection. This proof comes from that set. The other two sets were trimmed to small die proof size.
Ex Southgate and Prentiss Cromwell. Scott value as normal large die proof.

In 1915 a limited special printing of 413 different small die proofs was created for the Panama-Pacific Exposition. They were printed on yellowish wove paper, and it is believed no more than five examples of each stamp were produced. This 2c Hudson-Fulton Panama-Pacific proof is the only example we have offered since we started keeping computerized records 30 years ago. We are aware of one other, heavily toned, offered in a 2003 Rumsey sale. We would be very surprised if five actually exist.
