Positions 11-13R0, horizontal strip of three, wonderful depth of color, full margins to touched or barely in at lower right, cancelled by red grid cancels with matching "U.S. Express Mail N.Y. (1851) route agent's circular datestamp on blue folded cover to Boston, file fold slightly creases middle stamp, right stamp with some light wrinkling from application, still Very Fine, while pairs of the 3c Orange Brown on cover are sometimes encountered, strips of three or larger are very rare, particularly paying a domestic rate, we have offered only two covers in the past 22 years bearing a strip of three

A RARE AND SPECTACULAR BARNABAS BATES "CHEAP INLAND AND OCEAN POSTAGE" PROPAGANDA COVER.
Barnabas Bates (1785-1853) was born in England and came to the United States as a child. He became a Baptist preacher in Rhode Island, where he was also for some time collector of the port of Bristol under President Adams. He became a Unitarian and established in New York in 1825 a weekly paper called the Christian Inquirer. During the Jackson administration he received an appointment in the New York post office and was for some time acting postmaster. He became an advocate for cheap land and ocean postage and lived to see the 3c domestic rate introduced in 1851

Spring Station Jun. 23" railroad route agent's circular datestamp on small piece, stamp with single short perf at upper left, Fine and rare, we have encountered this particular station cancel on a 3c entire but never before on an 1851-57 Issue stamp, the Remele catalog does not even contain a complete drawing of this marking (p. 83)

Full to clear margins all around, wonderful depth of color and proof-like impression, tied by bold dark blue "Due WAY 1c" in frame with integral grid, an extremely rare marking created to cancel the stamp and indicate the way fee in one operation, matching "Mobile Ala. Jan. 21" (1852) circular datestamp on greenish folded cover to Providence R.I., probably originated in New OrleansEXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE MOBILE "DUE WAY" MARKING.

Tied by blue "U.S. Packet Natchez" oval with matching "Route 7309" double oval on oatmeal cover to Natchez Miss., slight overall toning, stamp with single pulled perf, otherwise Fine, scarce use of these markings on a No. 25 cover, according to the Feldman Waterways book, Leathers & Holmes gained the contract for Route 7309 in February 1854 at $75,000 a year for three trips per week, this was renewed as 8165 in July 1858 at $40,000 a year, accompanied by a No. 11 tied on piece by the same "Route 7309" marking, ex Hulme

Natchez Route 8165 Nov. 6" route agent's circular datestamp on 1858 folded printed Prices Current with additional letter, to St. Joseph La., side stamps with few small faults at bottom, still Very Fine and attractive, the Natchez named in this circular datestamp was built at Cincinnati in 1854, Route 8165 carried mail from Vicksburg to New Orleans

3c Orange Brown, Ty. II (10A). Bright shade, ample to large margins all around, tied by bold strike of blue framed "Troy & New York Steam Boat" handstamp, matching "2cts" in circle, on blue folded cover to Utica N.Y., docketing on back dated Oct. 8, 1851EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE LATEST RECORDED USE OF THE TROY & NEW YORK STEAM BOAT MARKING WITH THE "2CTS" RATE HANDSTAMP ON A COVER WITH STAMPS.
This cover is illustrated and described in detail on pp. 232-234 of Vol. II of Ashbrook's The United States One Cent Stamp of 1851-57. The "Troy & New York Steam Boat" framed marking was used on letters received at Troy from non-contract steamboats carrying mail on the Hudson River. The 2c marking indicates the amount charged by the Troy postmaster, but as recently explained by Daniel J. Ryterband (Chronicle 263), there was no official justification for assessing this fee. In late 1851 or early 1852, the practice of collecting the additional 2c was discontinued.

3c Claret, Ty. II (11A). Ample to full margins, vivid color, tied by manuscript "Way 1 Cent" stagecoach way mail marking, matching "Sutton N.H. Dec. 15" postmark on border embossed lady's small cover to Amherst N.H., Very Fine and scarce, stagecoach operators with mail contracts picked up mail along their routes and deposited it at the next scheduled stop with a post office, these stagecoach "Way" markings are much scarcer than those applied on steamboats, the Sutton N.H. markings are Rarity 10 in the Simpson book, with 1988 P.F. certificate calling the stamp Dull Red

3c 1851-57 Issues on Steamboat Covers. Eight covers, one with No. 10A with red "STEAM" straightline, others bear Nos. 11 or 26, including a variety of "Steam" or "Steamboat" markings plus name-of-boats including Bayou Bell, Regular Ouachita Passenger Packet and Lake Superior Iron City, some minor stamp faults to be found except the Iron City cover with a defective stamp, overall Fine-Very Fine and attractive group
