1c Blue, Ty. II-IV (7-9). Positions 4-5/14-15R1L, unused (no gum) block of four, Ty. II at top left (4R), others Ty. IV (5R recut once at bottom, 14-15R recut once at top and bottom), large to huge margins including parts of adjoining stamps at left and part of top sheet margin, deep shade, tiny thin spot in top left stamp (4R), other three with ink spots on backEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNUSED BLOCK OF THE ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE FROM PLATE ONE LATE, CONTAINING THE ONLY TYPE II POSITION ON THE PLATE.
Position 4R1L is the only position on the plate that was not recut on Plate 1 Late, thus producing a Type II stamp. Unused multiples containing 4R1L are very rare. This block of four was originally joined with the block of six from Positions 6-7/16-18R1L offered in the following lot.
