Category — Plate Four Type III
1c Blue, Ty. III (8). Positions 64-66R4, C Relief, horizontal strip of three, large margins to slightly in at left and touched at top, intense dark shade and early impression (at this stage, Position 66R4 shows a small break at top), tied by "New Orleans La. Jan. 30, 1858" circular datestamp on cover to Baton Rouge La.FINE-VERY FINE TYPE III STRIP OF THREE ON COVER. THIS IS REPORTED TO BE THE ONLY KNOWN STRIP OF THREE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE III ON COVER. A GREAT RARITY.
Multiples of the 1c 1851 Type III Imperforate on cover were the subject of an article by Calvet M. Hahn in the Chronicle (November 1982). Hahn's article correctly notes that Type III multiples can only occur in a few places on Plate 4 where two or more contiguous Type III positions were present (in this case, three C Reliefs, Positions 64-66R4). Hahn's article attempts to document the known examples of Type III multiples, but he was apparently unaware of this cover bearing a strip of three from Positions 64-66R4.
Signed and plated by Ashbrook. Scott value for off-cover strip of three is $11,000.00
