10c Green, Ty. III (15). Large margins all around, used with 1c Blue, Ty. II (7), Positions 67-68R2, tied by "San Francisco Cal. 5 Jan." (1857) circular datestamps on cover originating in Hawaii and addressed to Wolcott Vt., mostly clear strike of red "Honolulu * U.S. Postage Paid * Dec. 6" (1856) circular datestamp, bright and freshVERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE FRANKING PAYING THE 10-CENT TRANSCONTINENTAL POSTAGE AND 2-CENT SHIP CAPTAIN'S FEE ON A COVER FROM HAWAII TO THE UNITED STATES.
This cover was carried on the L. P. Foster, departing Honolulu on Dec. 6, 1856, and arriving in San Francisco on Dec. 22. It was datestamped by the San Francisco post office on Jan. 5, 1857, when the mails were prepared for the next sailing via Panama. The 12c United States postage on covers from Hawaii was usually paid with a single 12c stamp. Very few covers are known with 1c 1851 and 10c 1855 Issue frankings.
