Sale 996, Lot 3253, 1857 3c Perforated Issue - Type III Balances3c Dull Red, Ty. III, Numeral "5" Cancels (26). Three covers and one stamp, each with a bold central strike of a numeral "5" handstamp, slightly different styles and not tying the stamps, Very Fine and unusual, while postmasters in this period occasionally used their rating numerals as obliterators, this late in the life of the 3c 1851-57 issues the numeral "3" is the one most often seen, the "5" used here was long obsolete by 1857, the 5c single rate was lowered on to 3c on July 1, 1851 and the 5c unpaid rate was eliminated on April 1, 1855
