3c Dull Red, Ty. III, Double Impression (26e). Strong doubling especially apparent in value label, tied by lightly struck "New Orleans La." circular datestamp which barely cancels stamp, on 1859 folded letter to Boston, stamp with several margin nicks and faint creasingFINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY TWO EXAMPLES KNOWN AND THE ONLY ON-COVER EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 3-CENT TYPE III WITH DOUBLE IMPRESSION.
A review of the Philatelic Foundation records and Power Search located only this example and the one in the previous lot as genuine double impressions. There are a couple of additional stamps that have been certified as partial "kiss impressions", which typically show doubling of a small part of the design.
