Sale 993, Lot 333, 10c 1857-60 Issue Off Cover10c Green, Ty. III-III-II (33). Positions 1-3L1, horizontal strip of three, left pair Ty. III misplaced transfers, right stamp Ty. II, gorgeous centering, deep rich color and proof-like impression, neat strikes of circular datestamp, end stamps with tiny perf flaws

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE HORIZONTAL PAIR COMBINING TYPES II AND III. ONLY A FEW MULTIPLES ARE KNOWN, AND THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST.

The 10c relief entries on Plate 1 usually produced horizontal rows of one type. Type I comes from the bottom row of the plate. Type IV was created when four Type II and four Type III positions were recut throughout the plate. Apart from these exceptions, the relief-transfer method produced alternating rows of Types II and III, making vertical pairs possible from a multitude of positions. However, only the misplaced transfers in Positions 1L and 2L produced Type III's in the top row. A Type II-III combination in a horizontal pair is only possible with Positions 2-3L.
