5c Red Brown, Double Impression (1e). Horizontal pair, right stamp shows significant doubling at upper left corner, the two positions also show misalignment of entries on the plate, huge margins including sheet margin at top, cancelled by blue grids, matching "Lockport N.Y. Sep. 3" circular datestamp on 1850 folded letter to New York CityVERY FINE. THIS IS THE BASIS FOR THE SCOTT LISTING OF THE DOUBLE IMPRESSION ON THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE. NO OTHERS ARE KNOWN. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THE ISSUE.
Accompanied by 1992 note from William Hatton stating that this was added to the Scott Catalogue listing in 1993 based on his recommendation.
