TRINIDAD, 1901, 1d Black on Red, Ty. II, Value Omitted (78a; SG 127a). Lightly hinged, with gutter margin at right, bright color, faint trace of lettering at end as on all known examplesVERY FINE AND CHOICE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO EXAMPLES OF THIS DISTINCTIVE VALUE OMITTED ERROR AVAILABLE TO COLLECTORS.
This lot also includes an informative typed letter dated May 6, 1902 from Bright & Sons of London, stating "We hear from a correspondent that a number of unused 1d stamps was issued from your Post Office with the value omitted. We are desirous of securing some of these..." and with handwritten response below "Only 7 were sold four (4) of which were posted on letters and they were thoroughly inked over by the Postal authorities. Consequently were of no use." and signed by the postmaster. All three unused examples are accounted for. One is in the Royal Collection. The other, which is from the position to the left of the stamp offered here, was in the Sir John Marriott Collection.
