10c Green, Ty. IV/IV/I (34/34/31). Positions 76/86/96L1, vertical strip of three, top and middle stamps Type IV (recut once at bottom and once at top, respectively), bottom stamp Type I, intense color and extraordinarily well-centered, New Orleans circular datestamps, French transit datestamp and small part of red U.S. transit, tiny paper split in margin just below "E" of "Cents" on center stamp, hardly noticeable and does not detract from the appearance of this rare multipleEXTREMELY FINE. A TRULY REMARKABLE AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE 10-CENT 1857 ISSUE MULTIPLE, FROM THE ONLY PLACE IN THE PLATE OF 200 WHERE TYPES IV AND I MEET.
There are only four possible Ty. IV vertical pairs (54/64L; 55/65L; 64/74L; 76/86L) on the plate of 200 (two horizontal pairs come from 54-55L and 64-65L). There is one possible vertical strip of three (54/64/74L) and one possible block of four (54-55/64-65L). Since Type I comes only from the bottom-row positions on the plate and only one position in the ninth row is Type IV (86L), the only Type IV-I combination possible is a vertical multiple containing 86/96L. This strip of three has the extra Type IV position in the eighth row (76L), forming a wonderful Type IV/IV/I combination. Only a few such multiples exist.
