Sale 978, Lot 1013, 1857-60 Issue3c Dull Red, Ty. IV (26A). Original gum, lightly hinged, vibrant color as fresh as the day it was printed, unusually choice centering with well-balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 3-CENT DULL RED TYPE IV, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE.

Scott 26A, which is the only Type IV 3c, is defined as having the outer lines at both top and bottom extending only up to the edge of the design. It is often difficult to identify this type outside of multiples due to the narrow spacing of the perforations. The stamp offered here, with wide margins all around, clearly shows the characteristics of the type.

P.S.E. encapsulated (OGph, XF-Superb 95; SMQ $2,200.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date, and the only example to achieve this grade.
