Nueva Orleans. Red laureated oval handstamp with matching "Yndias" handstamp on folded letter dated June 1803, various ms. incl. "Franco Marin" which served as free frank, vertical file fold, some slight edgewear and stainingVERY FINE. A SCARCE AND DESIRABLE MARKING FROM NEW ORLEANS SENT DURING THE SPANISH COLONIAL PERIOD.
According to the American Stampless Cover Catalogue, the "Nueva Orleans" marking was resurrected in 1799-1803 for use as an imprimatur on ship's manifests and as an unrated free frank on wrappers. Only five examples are recorded.
