Sale 973, Lot 317, The Jonathan Rose Collection of First Issues of the World (Argentina thru G.B.)BAVARIA, 1849, 1kr Deep Black, Plate I (1a; Michel 1 Ib). Large and even margins all around, intense shade, tied by three strikes of indistinct tombstone cancels on folded printed circular from Kenmath to Obergunzburg, sealed tear on bottom flap mentioned only for 100% accuracy

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE BAVARIA 1849 ONE-KREUZER USED ON A PRINTED CIRCULAR.

Bavaria was the first German state to issue its own postage stamps. The 1kr was used primarily for local mail and also for use on printed matter such as this circular.

Signed Bloch. Scott Retail as cancelled by both pen and postmarks -- this should be considered far more desirable as there are no pen cancels.
