Sale 973, Lot 143, 1880 American Bank Note Company Special Printing7c Scarlet Vermilion, Special Printing (196). Without gum as issued, brilliant color on bright paper, unusually choice centering for this issue, long and full perforations all around

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE 1880 7-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING.

Our recently updated census records for Scott 196 contain approximately 80 certified examples. It is the most common of the soft-paper Special Printings because the 7c was no longer in production in 1880 and, probably to some degree, because it can be easily identified since there is no regular issue on soft paper.

Unpublished Census No. 196-UNC-20. With 1993 and 2004 P.F. certificates. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90; SMQ $26,000.00). We feel SMQ value is accurate for this stamp in this grade -- this exact copy realized $18,000 hammer in our Sale 881 in 2004.
