Sale 968A, Lot 206, 1875 Continental Bank Note Co. Special Printing (Scott 168-180)7c Reddish Vermilion, Special Printing (171). Without gum as issued, full perforations all around without the usual scissors-separation, radiant color as fresh as the day it was printed on crisp paper, perfect centering with wide and balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE 7-CENT 1875 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING IN EXISTENCE. THIS SENSATIONAL STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

Our recently updated census records for Scott 171 contain 70 certified examples. Most stamps were scissors-separated, affecting the perforations on at least one side and in some cases two or three sides. The stamp offered here, with intact perforations on all sides, superb centering, and remarkably vibrant color is, in our opinion, the ultimate copy for the connoisseur collector.

Unpublished Census No. 171-UNC-69. With 1967 and 1989 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95). As an indication of the rarity of this stamp in better grades, SMQ does not even price this above the grade of 80, and the next highest grade in the P.S.E. Population Report is Fine 70.
