10c Green, Ty. I (13). Original gum which is very lightly hinged and absolutely pristine, mostly large to huge margins incl. sheet margin at bottom, deep rich color and proof-like impression on crisp paper

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I IMPERFORATE. THIS SUPERB STAMP IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE. ITS GUM, MARGINS, COLOR, IMPRESSION AND OVERALL FRESHNESS ARE UNRIVALLED.

Type I stamps come from the bottom 20 positions of the plate. They are the only stamps to show the design complete at bottom. For some reason the sheet margin at bottom was often trimmed away, leaving a dearth of quality copies. The Type IV stamps come from only eight positions, but we would rank the two types equally in terms of the rarity of sound four-margined original-gum copies.

A review using Power Search demonstrates exactly how rare this type is in sound, four-margin, original-gum condition. The last example we offered in comparable condition was in our 1999 Golin sale, and the stamp offered here is clearly superior by virtue of the wider top margin.
