Sale 951, Lot 4, 1847 Issue5c Red Orange (1c). Horizontal pair, large even margins all around, brilliant color nicely complemented by red grid cancels on nicely blued paper

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN IMMENSELY RARE PAIR OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE ELUSIVE RED ORANGE SHADE. THIS IS THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THIS SHADE, AND ONE OF ONLY TWO SOUND PAIRS. A HIGHLY EXHIBITABLE 1847 ISSUE ITEM.

According to a series of articles by the late Calvet M. Hahn in the Collector's Club Philatelist, the Red Orange shade was printed some time during the fourth and last printing, which took place in December 1850. Mr. Hahn reports seeing only five covers in his article, and that Chase had only seen three.

The P.F. has certified four pairs of this distinctive shade. Of these, only one other is sound.

Ex Grunin and Hinrichs. With 1977, 1996 and 2004 P.F. certificates
