1910, November 12, Early Ship-to-Shore Attempt, S.S. "Pennsylvania" (AAMC 1a). Cover with American Red Cross corner card bearing two 1c stamps tied by "Rutherford N.J., Nov. 13, 1910" cancel addressed to Joseph Steinmetz in Philadelphia, printed cachetFRESH AND VERY FINE. A RARE COVER, WHICH WAS SOLD ON BOARD THE S.S. "PENNSYLVANIA" AND INTENDED TO BE CARRIED ON THE FIRST SHIP-TO-SHORE ATTEMPTED FLIGHT.
A Curtis biplane was supposed to have been launched from a specially built platform on the ship to bring mails to shore, in a trip officially sanctioned by the Postmaster General. The flight was terminated due to equipment problems.
