Sale 924, Lot 7, 1870-71 National Bank Note Co. Grilled Issue15c Orange, Split Grill (141 var). H. Grill clearly showing part of grill at bottom and part at top, original gum, lightly hinged, radiant color, unusually wide margins for this issue, essentially a Jumbo-margined stamp

EXTREMELY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 15-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE, WHICH CLEARLY SHOWS THE SPLIT GRILL VARIETY.

This is the only 15c split grill we have offered -- in either unused or used condition -- since keeping computerized records. The Scott Catalogue assigns the variety a meager $1,250.00 premium, which in our opinion inadequately reflects its rarity. Even without the grill variety, this superb wide-margined stamp would rank among the most desirable examples of the 15c 1870 Grill extant.

With 1980 and 1997 P.F. certificates.
