Sale 905, Lot 2378, 1908-09 Washington-Franklin Issues (Scott 331 thru 356)2c Carmine, Foreign Entry of 1c Design (332 var). Rich color and sharp detailed impression showing clear entry of the 1c design in lettering at bottom and in the hair, heavy duplex cancel, small tear at top left

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE FOREIGN ENTRY OF THE ONE-CENT FRANKLIN ON THE TWO-CENT 1908 WASHINGTON PLATE.

Only one position -- the fourth position under the plate no. on the upper left pane of Plate 5299 -- yields this interesting variety. It is believed to have been created when a 1c transfer roll was erroneously used to enter this position on the 2c plate. When it was discovered prior to printing, the design was burnished away and corrected with a 2c entry. Some elements of the 1c design remained. This same plate was also used during production of Scott Nos. 344, 349, 375 and 384.

With 1992 P.F. certificate. Accompanied by detailed Dec. 1968 United States Specialist article.
