Sale 1376, Lot 696, 1869 Pictorial Issue including Without Grill Varieties (Scott 112-122)

90c Carmine & Black, Without Grill (122a). Part original gum which covers approximately half of the back, deep rich colors, choice centering

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE SOUND AND SUPERBLY CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE WITHOUT GRILL.

Our most recent review of the records of The Philatelic Foundation found 26 certified examples. Several have not been seen in some time and need to be reexamined. Only 14 have either part or full original gum and only eight of these original-gum stamps are certified as sound. This is one of the finest known with any amount of intact original gum.

Ex Coulter. With 1975 P.F. and 2006 P.S.E. certificates (latter states "small part o.g.")
