Sale 1347, Lot 4136, One-Cent 1851-56 Issue

1c Blue, Ty. IIIa (8A). Position 72L4, large and well-proportioned margins, rich color, face-free circular datestamp cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE IIIa. PARTICULARLY DESIRABLE FROM PLATE 4.

With 1987 and 2004 P.F. certificates. With 2003 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98). We feel this is a bit overzealously graded and using today's standards it would be more likely to receive a 95 — in either case this is a beautiful and superb stamp. The SMQ value of $10,000 for Superb 98 is for a standard example from Plate 1E — P.S.E. does not grade this from Plate 4, though the Scott value for Plate 4 is 50% greater than for Plate 1E.
