Sale 1334, Lot 66, 1869 Pictorial Issue and Re-Issue

90c Carmine & Black (122). Original gum described on older certificate as part original gum and on most recent certificate as disturbed original gum, it covers the entire back of the stamp, deep rich colors, gorgeous centering with unusually Jumbo margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE. THE CENTERING AND SIZE OF MARGINS ON THIS STAMP ARE TRULY OUTSTANDING. this was recently graded superb 98 jumbo by p.s.e., by far the highest grade awarded to this issue.

The 90c 1869 Pictorial is widely admired for its beautiful engraving and dignified portrait of Abraham Lincoln. However, collectors have been frustrated in their efforts to acquire choice examples of this issue. Used 90c stamps are typically heavily cancelled, because the high denomination was cause for postal clerks to thoroughly obliterate any chance for re-use. Naturally, the significant monetary value of 90c in 1869 limited the number of unused stamps that would be saved for future collectors.

With 1985 P.F. certificate. With 2024 P.S.E. certificate (DOG, Superb 98 Jumbo). The Superb 98 Jumbo grade is three levels higher than the next highest grade (95) for any unused Scott 122 certified by P.S.E. Six stamps have receive the 95 grade: three with original gum and three in the broad NG/REG/D-POG categories (one with no gum, one with redistributed original gum, and one with large part original gum). XF-Superb 95 is the highest grade priced in SMQ for a stamp with any original gum, at $75,000 (OG).
