Sale 1291, Lot 635, Confederate General Issues (1-5)5c Green, Stone 2, Misplaced Transfer (1 var). Position 35 in place of Position 10, right sheet margin (not possible on normal Position 35), large margins at left and bottom showing traces of removed transfer, slightly in at top, cancelled by Tuscaloosa Star fancy cancel, "Tuscaloosa Al. May 10" (1862) circular datestamp on University of Alabama green lithographed cover to Demopolis where forwarded to Greenville Ala. (addressed in red) with 5c Green (1), top sheet margin (small tears), large at sides, touched at bottom, tied by "Demopolis Ala. May 14" circular datestamp, forwarded again to Columbus Miss. but no additional postage paid

VERY FINE. THIS REMARKABLE COVER IS NOT ONLY AN UNUSUAL COMBINATION OF FORWARDING, A COLLEGE DESIGN AND FANCY CANCEL, BUT IT BEARS ONE OF THE FEW EXISTING EXAMPLES OF THE 5-CENT LITHOGRAPH MISPLACED-TRANSFER VARIETY.

Position 35 was copied and used to replace the damaged transfer occupying Position 10 on the printing stone. The right sheet margin, which only occurs along the right column of positions, and the traces of the old transfer in the bottom margin are characteristics identifying this as the Misplaced Transfer variety (Position 35 over 10).
