Sale 1291, Lot 611, Postmasters' ProvisionalsMemphis Tenn., 5c Red (56X2). Margins all around although slightly rounded at upper right, tied by part strike of Memphis Tenn. circular datestamp on cover to Macon Tenn. endorsed "From Jnodee Mitchell, Lieut in Q.M. Department, Genl. G. J. Pillows Brigade", expertly cleaned and improved along edges, Very Fine appearance, ex Walske, Confederate provisional covers are rare with military endorsements and this one for General Gideon J. Pillow's brigade is particularly desirable, the controversial Pillow was a rare U.S. Army major general who became a Confederate general, we did not research how many such officers existed but it must have been few, he was suspended by his superiors in both armies and General Winfield Scott wrote that Pillow was "amiable and possessed of some acuteness, but the only person I have ever known who was wholly indifferent in the choice between truth and falsehood, honesty and dishonesty -- ever as ready to attain an end by the one as the other, and habitually boastful of acts of cleverness at the total sacrifice of moral character"
