Sale 1291, Lot 189, 1851-56 Issue5c Red Brown (12). Full to ample margins, rich color, tied by "Vicksburg Miss. Jan. 7" circular datestamp on small narrow blue cover to Gourdin's Depot S.C., with manuscript "NERR" notation (Northeastern Railroad), slightly reduced and refolded, upper right corner of cover with some restoration

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE DOMESTIC USE OF THE 5-CENT 1856 ISSUE OVERPAYING THE 3-CENT RATE.

The Frajola and Mayer book records fewer than four uses of the 5c 1856 issue overpaying the 3c domestic rate (this cover illustrated on p. 33). Nearly all single uses of the 5c are shore-to-ship rates for mail sent overseas.

Ex Hessel and Mayer.
