Sale 1291, Lot 188, 1851-56 Issue3c Dull Red, Ty. I, Chicago Perf 12-1/2 (11 var). Straight edge at left, tied by "Chicago Ill. Jul. 18, 1856" circular datestamp on cover to Fisherville Tenn., with blue embossed Tremont House oval on top flap (piece out), some edgewear

FINE. A DESIRABLE EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT CHICAGO PERFORATION ON A TREMONT HOUSE HOTEL CORNER CARD, ORIGINATING FROM R. K. SWIFT, THE PROMOTER OF THE HADLEY PERFORATING MACHINE.

Wilson Hulme recorded five covers that do not bear the name of R. K. Swift, but can be tied to the company. The cover offered here was not included in his census, so is an addition to that number. The handwriting matches that of another Swift cover, offered in the Wagshal sale (Sale 996, lot 3183) and becomes the second known on a Tremont House hotel cover.
