VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1904 2-CENT "CANAL ZONE" OVERPRINT WITH THE "L" OF "CANAL" SIDEWAYS. ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL OF ALL CANAL ZONE ERRORS.

According to Canal Zone Stamps, this is the only example of a Canal Zone overprint where a letter is turned sideways. The authorities noticed the error, and went to the trouble of removing and destroying the one stamp from each pane. 920 were destroyed -- 17 unused and four used are recorded. This is the second we have offered since keeping computerized records.
