5c Red Brown (1). Bright shade which has been described as Orange Brown in the past, intermediate impression, large margins to clear, cancelled by blue "5" numeral handstamp, matching "STEAM 5" in double oval over-struck with a similar "STEAM 10" handstamp, "Mobile Ala. Dec. 11" circular datestamp on folded letter datelined "Columbus Miss. Dec. 11, 1849" to Buchannon Carroll & Co. in New Orleans, manuscript "Sunny South" at bottom, some minor splitting along foldsVERY FINE. A VERY SCARCE USE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE FROM COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI, TO NEW ORLEANS VIA TOMBIGBEE RIVER AND MOBILE, ALABAMA.
This was carried from Columbus to New Orleans via Tombigbee River and Mobile. It was originally rated as a single rate (5c) then changed to double rate (10c) due to weight.
