Apr. 22" (1846) circular datestamp with matching "Paid" on blue folded letter to Northampton N.Y., traces of original gum around top edge of stamp reinforce the tie

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING TIED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BUCHANAN BALTIMORE PROVISIONAL ON BLUISH PAPER. ONE OF PERHAPS THREE KNOWN EXAMPLES USED WITH THE RED BALTIMORE DATESTAMP.

The Baltimore provisionals were printed first on bluish and then on white paper (the Scott catalogue reverses the chronological order). Most examples are known used with the blue Baltimore datestamp. A second use of the same datestamp here is recorded also struck in red (Hayes census No. 15). A third, dated April 6, 1846, was offered in our Sale 1000.
