Sale 1262, Lot 64, Postmasters’ Provisionals, 1847 Issue5c Red Brown (1). Horizontal pair, right stamp dot in "S" variety, large margins to just in at bottom right, dark shade, worn-plate impression, tied by manuscript "X" cancels, "Alden N.Y. Oct. 1" (1848) manuscript postmark on buff envelope to Liverpool, England, neat "8" pence due handstamp as this was carried on a private steamer during the Retaliatory Period, endorsed "Via steamer from Boston" and carried on the non-contract steamer Washington Irving owned by Enoch Train & Co., "28 OC 1848 Liverpool Ship" backstamp, some wear and toned spots

VERY FINE. A SCARCE RETALIATORY PERIOD USAGE OF THE 1847 ISSUE.

The 10c in postage paid the rate from Alden N.Y. to Boston. It was then carried by private ship and the recipient was charged 8 pence.
