5c "Cobalt Blue", Stone 3 (4 var). Positions 9-10, horizontal pair, lightly folded between before application, large margins and beautiful intense color, tied by "Richmond Va. Jun. 12, 1862" circular datestamp on small cover to Major Joseph Abney in Charleston S.C., docketed by Abney at left, Extremely Fine, a famous Confederate item which is ex Brown, Caspary, Haas and from our 1984 Rarities sale, oddly accompanied by a 2004 Swiss B.P.B. certificate which states the color and the provenance, also noted on back "The Rembrandt of the 5c Blues", accompanied by biographical information on Major Abney
