Sale 1262, Lot 400, C.S.A. Handstamped Paid and Due MarkingsBowling Green Ky. Oct. 2?. Blue circular datestamp with manuscript "Paid 5" on small pink cover to Washington, East Tennessee with red and blue 11-Star Confederate Flag with Liberty Cap Patriotic design (F11-23), small tear at top and staining which could (and should) be professionally removed

FINE APPEARING AND EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS 11-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGN, WITH A MOST UNUSUAL ARRANGEMENT OF STARS. PROBABLY NOT MORE THAN THREE ARE KNOWN.

This 11-Star design, with seven stars at top in a half-circle, three stars at bottom and one star at center, is extremely rare. We have offered only one other example, from the Kilbourne collection, which has much lighter colors (Sale 1190, lot 1617). There is also a different example illustrated in the C.S.A. Catalog, which, like the design offered here, has darker colors and blue bars connecting the top and bottom red stripes (it is not clear if that example is used, but we presume it is). The Wishnietsky book Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages illustrates the ex Kilbourne cover and states "one reported". This cover has been off the market since the 1960s and was unknown to us.

Accompanied by a stampless cover from the same correspondence. C.S.A. Catalog value $10,000.00.
