Sale 1262, Lot 379, Civil War: FederalProf. Lowe's Union Balloon. Unused Patriotic design with "Gens. McDowell & McClellan's Aireal [sic] reconnoissances" caption at bottom, with handcolored balloon and flags, some mucilage on back of little consequence, Very Fine, an extremely rare design, according to the Schoendorf book, the text at bottom refers to the ascent made on Sept. 30, 1861, from Upton's Hill by Lowe, who was accompanied by the two generals, they were able to observe the Confederate infantry and cavalry near Fairfax, accompanied by anonymous flyer dated June 28, 1863 to Confederates at Vicksburg which includes "Your present form or Government crushes out the hoipes of every poor man"
