Forwarded by/Hale & Co./from/Norwich, Ct. Four-line handstamp (Ty. F27) with "Collect/6-1/4 Cents/for/Norwich Office" four-line handstamp (Ty. C11) on Aug. 23, 1844 folded letter addressed in blue to Worcester Mass., lightly inked but much clearer strikes than usual, Very Fine, the earliest recorded use of the Collect handstamp, Hale privately carried mail along the Norwich & Worcester Railroad route in 1844-45, a mail contract route agent was assigned to the 59 mile route in 1847 (see lot 26 for the earliest example of the route agent), ex Gutman
