1c Green, Louisiana Purchase (323). Straight edge at left, affixed on top of red, white, blue and gold ribbon and tied by "St. Louis Mo. Apr. 30 12-M 1904 World's Fair St. Louis" First Day machine cancel on cover to local address, some slight wearVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE FIRST DAY COVER OF THE ONE-CENT LOUISIANA PURCHASE ISSUE. ONE OF ONLY THREE FIRST DAYS ON AN ACTUAL COVER.
Of the approximately ten known First Days, eight are on cards and only three are on covers. The other covers do not have an exposition cancel -- one has a pair used from New York, the other was offered in our Dr. Martin sale (Sale 894, lot 329). Only one card has an exposition cancel.
With 1981 P.F. certificate. Illustrated in First Days, Oct. 15, 2000, p. 524. Scott value $7,500.00 with no distinction between cover, card or exposition cancel.
