2c Brown Violet, Columbian (231). Tied by target, indistinct circular datestamp on cover to Remsen N.Y., back with readable "Remsen Jan. 2, 1893" alternate First Day receiving backstamp which indicates this was mailed no later than January 2, stamp with few faults, cover with some edge tears and slightly reduced at left, otherwise Fine, the official first day of issue of the Columbian Issue (excluding the 8c) was January 1, 1893, which was a Sunday, when most post offices were closed, for this reason and the fact that there were no official first day ceremonies for new issues in this early period, philatelists have long considered January 2 as the accepted alternate First Day of Issue, with 1989 P.F. certificate, Scott value $4,000.00 as January 2 use
