Sale 1262, Lot 162, 1869 Pictorial Issue, Bank Note Issues3c Green (158). Tied by bold and clear strike of "H&W" Hayes & Wheeler 1876 campaign cancel with "Kingston N.Y. Apr. 23" circular datestamp on buff cover to Red Bank N.J., slightly reduced at left and stamp with minor corner crease mentioned for accuracy but utterly immaterial, Very Fine and extremely rare, this is the only recorded example of this cancel, the 1876 election was one of the most controversial in U.S. history, Rutherford B. Hayes and William A. Wheeler were ultimately elected after a vote of a special Electoral Commission, despite losing the popular vote and trailing the initial electoral vote (with four states in dispute), the "Compromise of 1877" that made this possible resulted in the end of Reconstruction
