Sale 1260, Lot 185, Worldwide Stamps and CoversFINLAND, 1940 Helsinki Olympics, Hammarsten-Jansson Composite Essays. Three sheets, each with seven different designs, in black, blue, and brown, on glossy paper, black with a faint horizontal crease

VERY FINE TRIO OF COMPOSITE ESSAYS FOR THE CANCELLED 1940 OLYMPICS IN HELSINKI.

The 1940 Olympics were originally scheduled to be held in Tokyo, but due to the 1937 Japanese invasion of China, they were rescheduled for Helsinki. With the outbreak of World War II, they were cancelled altogether. These composite essays were made for a proposed set commemorating the 1940 Helsinki Olympics, but no stamps were ever produced due to the cancellation of the Games.

Each sheet signed on the back in pencil by Henrik Pollak, and with his 1985 photo-opinions
