5c Red Brown (1). Rich color and worn-plate impression, large margins to clear, cancelled by black "(San) Francisc(o Cal.)" circular datestampVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF AN 1847 ISSUE STAMP WITH A SAN FRANCISCO TOWN DATESTAMP. SUPPLIES OF THE 1847 ISSUE WERE NOT SENT TO POST OFFICES ON THE WEST COAST.
Since the 1847 Issue was never supplied to post offices on the West Coast, only stamps that were carried to San Francisco by a private individual have California origin datestamps.
