Sale 1255, Lot 671, 3c 1869 Pictorial Issue (Scott 114)3c Ultramarine (114). Rich color, clear strike of Rose Blossom fancy cancel of Waterbury Conn. (Rohloff F-2), single dangling perf at lower left

VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE BEAUTIFUL ROSE BLOSSOM FANCY CANCELLATION OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT. THIS IS THE MOST ELABORATE FLOWER DESIGN CARVED BY THE POSTMASTER OF WATERBURY.

Several of the different Waterbury designs carved by postmaster John W. Hill are noteworthy for their elaborate designs, most famously the Running Chicken, and also the Bee, Eagle & Shield and some of the human faces. This Rose Blossom design is certainly one of the Hill's finest creations and is rare with probably fewer than eight known.
