Nov. 23" (1869) circular datestampVERY FINE STRIKE OF THE INTRICATELY CARVED ROSE BLOSSOM FANCY CANCELLATION OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT. THIS IS THE MOST ELABORATE FLOWER DESIGN CREATED BY THE POSTMASTER OF WATERBURY.
Several of the different Waterbury designs carved by postmaster John W. Hill are noteworthy for their elaborate designs, most famously the Running Chicken, and also the Bee, Eagle & Shield and some of the human faces. This Rose Blossom design is certainly one of the Hill's finest creations and is rare with probably fewer than eight known.
