Sale 1255, Lot 400, 3c 1861 Issue, Cancellations (Scott 65)3c Rose (65). Remarkably clear strike of grayish-blue Benedict Arnold's Leg in elaborate escutcheon fancy cancel of Brattleboro Vt., stamp with faults

A COMPLETE AND EXTRAORDINARILY SHARP STRIKE OF THIS FASCINATING FANCY CANCEL, DEPICTING BENEDICT ARNOLD'S LEG.

Before betraying the American cause, Benedict Arnold was wounded in the foot during the Battle of Quebec. He suffered further injuries at the Battles of Ridgefield and Saratoga, which ended his fighting career. A boot monument commemorating his pre-1780 service and his battle wounds is located at Saratoga National Historical Park, but it does not mention Arnold's name.

With 1992 P.S.E. certificate (signed by Frajola, Mandel and Hahn).
