10c Green, Ty. I (31). Beautifully centered with unusually wide margins, especially at top and bottom (where the defining characteristics of Type I appear), deep rich color, cancelled by bold strike of red Newark N.J. circular datestamp with integral "Paid", bright and freshEXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 10-CENT 1857 TYPE I WITH A VIVID RED DATESTAMP. PROBABLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THIS STAMP CANCELLED IN THIS MANNER.
Although only a few letters of the datestamp appear on this remarkable stamp, we are confident that it reads "Newark N.J. Paid". Based on surviving covers, the Newark post office evidently had the unusual habit of cancelling stamps on foreign-bound mail with its datestamp in red (see Sale 837, lot 64, and Sale 891, lot 2242).
Ex Dr. Morris. With 1992 and 2005 P.F. certificates.
