Sale 1255, Lot 317, 5c 1857 Issue (Scott 27-30A)5c Bright Red Brown (28b). A Relief from the top row of the plate, lovely warm 1858 printing shade, unusually wide and balanced margins with perfs well clear of outer projections on all sides, unobtrusive cancel (almost appears unused)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT TYPE I IN THE BRIGHT RED BROWN SHADE, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION.

With 2012 P.F. certificate (XF-Superb 95). By way of comparison, the highest grade awarded by P.S.E. is also a 95 (a single example at that grade, last offered by us in our 2012 Kirke sale).
