Used with 3c Rose (65) and 24c Lilac (78), 24c dark shade, tied by three wonderfully bold strikes of New York Foreign Mail "Sunburst" fancy cancel (14 rays around circle), red "N. York Br. Pkt. Paid May 10" (1864) circular datestamp on folded letter to Augustine Heard & Co. in Shanghai, China, sender's red oval backstamp, manuscript directive "Via Marseilles" and "pr Europa via Boston", magenta "48" manuscript credit--carried on Cunarder Europa, departing Boston May 11, 1864, arriving Queenstown May 22, then by P&O route--red "London Paid HN MY 23 64" datestamp, red "1d" British Colonial credit handstamp, blue "Hong Kong C JY [15?] 64" transit backstamp, horizontal fold at bottom, Extremely Fine, scarce usage and striking fancy cancel, prepaid for the old 57c rate, which was superseded by the 53c rate in June 1863, with 1990 P.F. certificate
