Sale 1248, Lot 2017, Mail to China24c Brown Lilac (70a). Horizontal pair and two singles neatly aligned to appear as a strip, crisp shade, used with two pairs of 3c Rose (65), each with interpane straight edge at right, tied by multiple strikes of grid cancel, 3c pair at bottom tied by red "N. York Br. Pkt. Paid Aug. 19" (1862) circular datestamp on blue folded letter datelined August 5 and addressed to Augustine Heard & Co. in Hong Kong, China, magenta manuscript "98" credit--carried on Cunarder Arabia from Boston Aug. 20, 1862, arriving Queenstown Aug. 29, then by P&O route--red "London Paid AU 30 62" datestamp, red crayon "2" double-rate British Colonial credit marking, blue "Hong Kong C OC 23 62" receiving backstamp, one 24c has tiny tear at top, still Extremely Fine, an impressive franking for the scarce $1.08 rate via Marseilles by British Packet for a 1/2 to 3/4 ounce letter with 98c credit, effective December 1861 to June 1863, with 1996 P.F. certificate
