Sale 1247, Lot 35, 1851-56 Issue (Scott 5-17)3c Orange Red, Ty. II, Horizontal Roulettes and Perf 16 x 15-1/2 (11A var). Vertical pair, original gum, h.r., separate roulettes applied horizontally and perforations applied both horizontally and vertically, "cancelled" by intersecting ruled lines

FINE AND RARE PAIR OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE WITH BOTH ROULETTE AND PERF 16 x 15-1/2 TRIAL PERFORATIONS.

The Toppan, Carpenter & Co. trial perforations are discussed by Dr. Chase in his 3c book (pp. 174-175). This is a fascinating pair with a combination of approximately 7-1/2 gauge roulettes, as well as perf 16 horizontally (thru the stamps near bottom) and perf 15-1/2 vertically. Dr. Chase states that all these experiments used stamps from a late 1855 printing of Plate 2L.
