Sale 1242, Lot 368, Ten-Cent: Type III, Off-Cover (Scott 15)10c Green, Type III (15). Positions 83-90R1, horizontal strip of eight, large margins to ample essentially all around, neat grid cancels, strip is affixed to paper trimmed to edges (probably from cover on which it originated), some non-obvious faults including some thin spots and light creases

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE LARGEST RECORDED STRIP OF THE 10-CENT 1855 TYPE III. AN IMPRESSSIVE MULTIPLE.

Due to the way the 10c Plate 1 was laid out--with mostly alternating rows of reliefs and types--the only way to obtain large multiples of Type III is in a horizontal strip. The Type III comes from the B Relief, which was used to enter the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th rows, plus the two misplaced relief positions in the top row (Positions 1-2L1). The iconic block of 21 offered in lot 346 illustrates this nicely. It contains a total of eleven Type III stamps, but not more than three are contiguous at any point. A Type III multiple must come from a horizontal strip. This strip of eight is therefore the largest recorded multiple containing only Type III stamps.
